The name may be unfamiliar, but MGM stock player Selena Royle was a lovely character actress who exuded warmth, kindness, sincerity, dedication and radiance throughout most of her 1940s Hollywood career. These inspiring traits extended into her outside life as well, where she contributed much of herself on behalf of the war effort. Selena started off in the limelight as the daughter of well-known playwright Edwin Milton Royle, who would be best remembered for his play "The Squaw Man," which was successfully filmed in 1914, 1918, and 1931. Despite her parents' protestations, Selena embarked on a theatrical career and, ironically, made her debut in a play that her father had written, "Launcelot and Elaine," in the role of Guinevere. She quickly grew in stature with celebrated theater roles throughout the 1920s: "Peer Gynt" (1923), "She Stoops to Conquer" (1924), "Paradise" (1927) and "Napoleon" (1928). She misstepped in the 1930s when she tried films with The Misleading Lady (1932) going nowhere, but made up for it upon her return to such theater roles as "The Roof" (1931), "When Ladies Meet (1932), "Days Without End" (1934), "Meet the Prince" (1935) and "The Prodigal Father" (1937). She also became a fixture on radio as a star of such popular serials as "Hilda Hope, M.D." and "Kate Hopkins."
In the early 1940s Royle would endear herself to the nation when she organized the Stage Door Canteen, a Broadway institution that entertained and served free meals to servicemen passing through New York. The canteen also brought about her return to films, playing herself in Frank Borzage's movie Stage Door Canteen (1943). Selena was subsequently picked up by MGM, and for the rest of the decade established an indelible mark in well-mounted soapers and sentimental yarns as the all-caring, self-sacrificing mother. She was never more touching than as the mother of five boys killed in action in The Fighting Sullivans (1944) or as Elizabeth Taylor's wise mom in Courage of Lassie (1946). Other MGM fodder would include Greer Garson's Mrs. Parkington (1944), Judy Garland's The Harvey Girls (1946) and the Cole Porter biopic Night and Day (1946).
Following her appearance in He Ran All the Way (1951), however, her career came to a screeching halt when she was branded a Communist sympathizer during the McCarthy-era hysteria. Refusing to appear before the "subversive"-hunting House Committee on UnAmerican Activities, she instead sued the infamous "Red Channels" that listed her name. She valiantly campaigned to restore her image and won, but the damage had already been done. She made only two films in its aftermath.
Divorced from actor Earle Larrimore in 1942, she later married actor Georges Renavent. They chose to leave the US permanently for Mexico. There Royle extended herself by converting her home into an "artistic salon," which encouraged painters, writers and composers. She also was a successful author of cookbooks and books about Mexico. One of her books was aptly titled "The Gringa's Guide to Mexican Cooking." Selena Royle passed away following a brief illness in 1983.- Actor

Hermosillo was one of the most successful Mexican directors. Born in Aguascalientes, a small city in central Mexico, Hermosillo's films dissected the hypocrisy of Mexican middle class and "torn the curtain" behind which many perversities are hidden. He became an important figure in Mexican contemporary cinema, and was known for treating themes of sexual diversity from a personal approach. One of the few openly gay Mexican directors, Hermosillo found great success with Doña Herlinda y su hijo (1985), a comedy about a mother of a gay doctor who manipulates her son, his male lover and his fiancée to fulfill her desire of becoming a grandmother. Homosexual themes in Hermosillo's films can be found in Matinee, El Cumpleaños del Perro, and Las apariencias engañan (1978). Hermosillo was also an explorer of film language. La Tarea is one of the most complex exercises in film style in recent years (the film consists of one long shot, from the POV of a camcorder). Hermosillo's films presented a fresh look at Mexican society. A strong advocate of digital cinema, he made ten feature films in this format.- Leon Janney was born on 1 April 1917 in Ogden, Utah, USA. A stage actor, Archie Mayo went to Hollywood in 1915 and worked until his retirement in 1946. He began directing slapstick two-reelers, later making features at Warner Bros. just about the time sound was being introduced into films. He did much work for Warners, but he also made films at Goldwyn and 20th Century-Fox. During the 1940s he became somewhat of a tyrant on the set and fought constantly with stars; the heavyset Mayo was referred to by one particular star as a "fat slob". He left the business for 12 years and returned as a producer in 1958.- Billy Wayne was born on 12 February 1897 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. - Arthur Vinton was born Hozel and picked his stage name because it sounded good. He was married twice and had one daughter by the first marriage. But he disowned her when he found she had a mixed marriage. His second wife survived him for about a year and they had no children. His acting career began in NY with some noted leading roles including the notorious "The Constant Sinner" written by Mae West. His Hollywood career spanned the 1930s, and he was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild. After Hollywood he had a noted career in radio and was a regular on the show "The Shadow". His resonant deep voice often cast him as the heavy in radio shows as This is Your FBI.
He purchased a farm with a pre-revolutionary war house in NY State near Newburgh, and raised cattle for a while. He called the farm Brittany Hills. But after World War II he raised turkeys under the name "The Barefoot boy of Brittany Hills". Poultry was very profitable in that era and he was able to start a gourmet restaurant on Long Island. After his stroke he retired to the warmth of Guadlajara, Mexico. He even learned Spanish with a good accent, and was an effective fund-raiser for the Episcopal Church.
His handsome looks and glamorous calling attracted women so he had various girl friends in NY while his wife lived on the farm. He had great charm, but also was a brutal individual with his family. Robert Buckner was one of those individuals who flourished under the strictures of the studio system. He came to Hollywood highly qualified, holding degrees from the Universities of Virginia and Edinburgh and from the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. His work history was also amazingly diverse. He had at one time been an English teacher, a courier, a tour guide, writer for the Daily Mail and London correspondent for the New York World. At the end of his lengthy sojourn in Britain, he returned to the U.S. and was for three years engaged by various publishing and advertising agencies. The busy Mr. Buckner still found sufficient time to write plays on and off-Broadway, and numerous short stories and magazine articles, one of which (for Atlantic Monthly) led to a lucrative contract with Warner Brothers in 1937.
Before long, Buckner had evolved into one of the most sought-after writers of screenplays for Warners typical fast-paced, fast-talking, tough action subjects, often starring Errol Flynn or James Cagney. He was handed several prestige assignments, including Santa Fe Trail (1940), Dive Bomber (1941) and Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). The resulting box-office success was rewarded with a promotion to producer and further hits with Gentleman Jim (1942) and Life with Father (1947). After leaving Warner Brothers in 1948, Buckner moved to Universal and rounded out his career in 1955 as a free-lance author of teleplays and novels ("Tiger by the Tail", Moon Pilot", "Starfire").- Actor
